WOW..this art is amazing to look at. It tells you you something from the vines and flowers to the little houses in the object. What made you pick this?

I'm not sure what it was for? It didn't have anything in the article about this type of art being used for a brooch or pendant. It did say that medallions of this sort were common and are found made of jade and ivory...maybe it was something to tell a story or display an image a person once viewed?

In the article I read about the piece, I did not see that it was worn by nobility or where it was discovered. It's purpose is still uknown.

Wow, what an incredibly elaborate piece of work. The detail carved into this tiny piece is simply astounding. It seems so well preserved for an ivory piece that old; it must have been very well loved. The mysterious scene is very engaging. Thanks for displaying this piece, a really cool find.

This truly is an amazing piece. It does beg the question, "what is it for?" Was it a type of brooch or pendant or something meant to be placed on an altar?
3 3/8 inches is just a little larger than the diameter of a standard baseball if that helps you to visualize the size of the piece and the amount of work necessary to create such intricate detail.
It’s a shame the artist is unknown. It would be interesting to learn if there are more parts to the piece, i.e. whether or not it is a part of a series that completes the story. It is such a different item than the standard landscape painting of the times that the artisan must have been in demand for his talent.

Thanks for sharing this piece with the rest of us.

wow is all i can say. I f you like that kind of thing you should check this site out http://www.willard-wigan.com/. This guy defiantly uses modern equipment but it is along the same lines. I am glad that you chose this because this is something that I had not thought of as art, or something I would have looked for as art. Thank you for broadening my horizons.

Hi Kristi. I enjoyed looking at the artwork that you have displayed here for us. It definitely is beautiful and has much detail. I wonder who did this artwork? How long did it take them? I would probably buy one if they were available and affordable. Good Job on your blog!
